Bagbin defers 2024 budget debate over absence of Finance Ministry representative

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has deferred the debate on the 2024 Budget due to the absence of a representative from the Finance Ministry in the house.

Prior to the second day of the debate, the Minority caucus raised concerns about the absence of all the Ministers at the Finance Ministry, as well as the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, to lay reports on matters relating to his sector.

Reacting to the concern of the minority in Parliament on Wednesday, Mr. Bagbin indicated that, “This house should be taken more seriously than they are doing. And I don’t think that we will do that in their absence. I insist that the Ministry be represented, either by the Minister himself, which is now impossible because he is out of the jurisdiction. At least the Minister or any of the Deputies should be here. That is very important. There are some things that, during the course of the debate, they could even, on the point of order, draw our attention because they are at the Ministry.”

“So we cannot just say because we have people at the public gallery ready to listen to us we should move on. NO, that I am not persuaded to do so. We will need the papers as referred to by the deputy majority whip, and then from there, if they are still not available, take the statements.”

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, however, has assured that one of the Deputy Ministers for Finance would be available in the house for the debate to resume.
