President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing the late Overlord’s death as a significant loss not only to the Dagbon Kingdom but also to Ghana as a whole.

The President made the remarks when he received a delegation from the Dagbon Traditional Council at the Presidency, where the Council formally informed him of the passing of the revered traditional ruler.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning the loss of a distinguished leader.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Ya-Na Abukari II, President Mahama recounted their close collaboration during efforts to restore lasting peace in Dagbon.

He described the late King as a father figure whose wisdom, guidance and leadership transcended political and social divides.

Paying tribute to the late Overlord’s legacy, the President praised Ya-Na Abukari II for his instrumental role in transforming Dagbon from a period of conflict into a beacon of peace, reconciliation and stability. 

He noted that the King’s commitment to dialogue, traditional governance and conflict resolution laid a strong foundation for unity and sustainable development within the kingdom.

President Mahama further described Ya-Na Abukari II as a respected national statesman and peacemaker whose humility, counsel and dedication to national cohesion earned him admiration across Ghana.

He assured the Dagbon Traditional Council of the Government’s full support in preparations for the final funeral rites, including the provision of appropriate state honours in recognition of the late King’s immense contribution to peace and nation-building.

The President concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Ya-Na Abukari II and asking for strength, comfort and guidance for the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation during this period of mourning.
