The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing for its highly anticipated regional delegates conference nationwide, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026. Among the regions, the North East stands out as a critical battleground marked by intense competition and strategic significance. The outcome of the elections in this region could have far-reaching implications for the party’s future, both locally and nationally.

At the center of the North East contest are two prominent figures vying for the top leadership position. The incumbent Chairman, Fuseini Nurudeen, is seeking an unprecedented third term, backed by supporters who praise his track record of delivering tangible development and progress within the region. On the other hand, Lawyer Sulley Sambian, the current Secretary, aims to ascend to the chairmanship, with grassroots support rallying behind his vision for fresh and dynamic leadership as the party gears up for the 2028 elections. This rivalry has captured attention across the region, with supporters emphasizing experience versus new ideas, making it a “must-watch” event filled with strategic alliances and high emotions.

Adding to the electoral excitement is the fiercely contested Women’s Organizer position, featuring three formidable candidates: Regional Women’s Organizer Hajia Umu Sanda Abubakari, Deputy Women’s Organizer Hajia Iddrisu Mawuda, and Hajia Abuba Jamila, a former constituency Women’s Organizer for Walewale. The contest among these women has been characterized by passionate campaigns and diverse support networks, with each candidate eager to secure an influential role that could shape women’s participation and influence within the party.

The North East regional elections have attracted a total of 34 aspirants vying for various key positions, reflecting vibrant democratic engagement within the party. These include two aspirants each for Chairmanship, 1st Vice Chairman, and 2nd Vice Chairman; four candidates each for Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, and Youth Organizer; three for Women’s Organizer; two for Nasara Coordinator; and four for Communications Officer. As the deadline approaches, the question remains: who will emerge victorious in these high-stakes contests? Will the seasoned experience of Chairman Fuseini prevail, or will grassroots support propel Lawyer Sambian to the top? And who will secure the coveted Women’s Organizer role among the fierce trio?

The outcome of these elections will not only determine the leadership of the North East Regional NPP but could also influence the party’s trajectory toward the critical 2028 elections. The region’s political landscape is at a pivotal point, with the entire nation watching closely.
