Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku has spoken out against reports claiming that he was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The reports surfaced on Saturday, August 15, amid claims that the former National Lottery Authority (NLA) Director-General had been detained as part of investigations into alleged financial wrongdoing during his tenure.

But Mr Awuku has described the reports as false.

In a video circulated on social media on Sunday, the MP was seen in Kumasi with NDC sympathiser Appiah Stadium.

He used the appearance to challenge the credibility of the arrest reports, pointing out that he had been present for the NPP’s regional elections on Saturday.

“Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi,” he said.

The allegations had linked the supposed EOCO detention to investigations into financial transactions and other dealings at the NLA.

No details were provided in the reports to independently establish the circumstances of the alleged arrest.

Mr Awuku’s appearance in Kumasi and his denial have since directly contradicted the claims that he was detained by EOCO on Saturday.
