Oleksandr Usyk’s search for a final defining night in boxing appears to be leading toward Deontay Wilder.

Talks for a heavyweight fight between the unbeaten Ukrainian and the former WBC titleholder have progressed, with an early-2027 window emerging as the working target, according to widely circulated reports Tuesday. The bout has not been formally announced, and the precise date and host city remain subject to negotiations.

The potential matchup would pair two of the era’s most recognizable heavyweights at very different stages of their careers: Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion who has spoken of having one fight left before retirement, and Wilder, whose concussive right hand has made him one of the division’s most dangerous punchers for more than a decade.

Usyk’s camp has not publicly finalized the contest, and there have been competing possibilities around his next move. Reports in recent weeks have linked the 39-year-old to other opponents, including David Benavidez, while promoters have continued to push the prospect of a fight with rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma. Still, Wilder has consistently been identified as Usyk’s preferred opponent for a proposed farewell bout.

For Usyk, a meeting with Wilder would be less about collecting another belt than closing a remarkable career on a major-stage event. Having already built a résumé that includes Olympic gold, undisputed reigns in two weight divisions and victories over Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois, Usyk has little left to prove in championship terms.

It would also carry substantial stakes despite the absence of a title. Wilder has the kind of single-punch threat that can change a fight instantly. Usyk, meanwhile, would enter as the more complete and decorated boxer, but he would be taking on a man whose best chance is also the one danger no opponent can afford to ignore.

The idea of a final Usyk fight has gathered momentum since he began moving away from the division’s title picture. Reports have portrayed Wilder as the opponent he wants, even as alternative names continue to surface and no event details have been confirmed.

If an agreement is reached, Usyk-Wilder would become one of the most compelling legacy fights available in the heavyweight division: an elite technician seeking to leave unbeaten, facing a former champion who still believes one clean right hand can reset the entire conversation around his career.
