The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) will resume spillage from the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as the water level rises to 45.2 feet following heavy rains in the Densu River catchment area.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, 6 September, the GWL stated that the water level at the dam has risen to 45.2 feet, following heavy rainfall upstream and continued rains across the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.

The current level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, prompting the water utility company to initiate controlled spillage as a precautionary measure to protect the integrity of the dam.

GWL has consequently issued an urgent warning to residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate their communities ahead of the commencement of the spillage.

The company urged residents to remain vigilant, comply with official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that could expose them to danger as the situation develops.

Communities identified as potentially at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.

GWL has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the relevant District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other stakeholders to take immediate precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.

The company said it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates as the water level and weather conditions evolve.

“Residents must remain alert, follow official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that may expose them to danger,” GWL cautioned.

The water company stressed that the safety of residents remained its priority and appealed for public cooperation to ensure that the spillage exercise is carried out without loss of life or property.
