Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says he has yet to be told whether the club will appeal Phil Foden's red card from Sunday's tense derby victory at Manchester United.

Foden was dismissed in the 23rd minute at Old Trafford after kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes during an off-the-ball confrontation. Referee Michael Oliver produced a straight red, leaving City to play out the remainder of the contest with ten men.

The numerical disadvantage did not cost them. City held firm and won 1-0, Erling Haaland's second-half goal settling a fiercely contested afternoon. The result was a considerable boost for Maresca, but attention has since turned to the length of Foden's suspension and whether the club will challenge it.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's Carabao cup tie with Norwich City, Maresca was unable to confirm city's position.

"I don't know," he said when asked whether the club would appeal.

The Italian has been consistent in his assessment of the incident itself. He accepted in the immediate aftermath of the derby that Foden's action met the threshold for dismissal, but he was equally firm that Fernandes should have been punished in the same way, arguing the flashpoint was judged on his player's reaction alone.

"I think Phil's red card is a red card," Maresca said after the game. "But for me, Bruno's action is also a red card."

A straight red for violent conduct ordinarily carries a three-match domestic suspension, which would rule Foden out of a significant run of games including this weekend premier league home game against Sunderland and a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool in October after the international break. The ban would apply across domestic competition, with City hosting Norwich on Thursday before welcoming Sunderland to the Etihad in the Premier League on Sunday.
