About 400 households involving more than 4,200 people, have been affected by floods in parts of the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region following the overflow of the River Dayi.

The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Prosper Kumi, disclosed that the flooding was caused by the River Dayi overflowing its banks, hence affecting several communities and households.

According to him, the number of affected households and individuals could increase as the flood waters move downstream and affect other communities. 

He described the situation as devastating, saying several residents have lost their homes and properties.

Mr Kumi stressed no lives were lost, describing it as a major relief amid the disaster. 

He commended the staff of the Municipal Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), security services, the area's Member of Parliament and the Volta Regional Minister for their support in managing the situation.

He said temporary holding areas had been secured for displaced residents with support from the Ghana Education Service (GES) which provided classrooms to accommodate the affected persons. 

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has also provided materials including mosquito nets and beds for the victims. 

The MCE appealed for further national support, particularly for residents who have lost their livelihoods. 

He cited the case of a resident whose entire rice and beans business was submerged in the floods, leaving the person with nothing to salvage.

Mr Kumi called on individuals, corporate organisations and all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the affected residents with essential items including clean water, beds and other relief supplies. 

He also called for support for small businesses that had suffered losses.

“This is where the communism is very important,the community feeling and the we life is key as Ghanaians to show our love to the affected victims"

“This is the time they need clean water, this is the time they need beds, shelter and other support. In fact yesterday I went to visit an affected home and all the food items and other provisions they sale have all submerge and they must be supported,” he stressed.

The MCE further appealed for machinery to dredge sections of the River Dayi and other affected areas to reduce the risk of future flooding. 

“We would appeal for some machineries to help dredge sections of the River Dayi and other affected areas to reduce future flooding.”

On the possibility of disease outbreaks, Mr Kumi said the assembly is engaging health officials to prepare for potential public health threats.

Mr Kumi thanked the residents and families who have opened their homes to accommodate flood victims.
