The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that more than 15,000 aspirants have been cleared to contest its upcoming constituency executive elections, with about 480 candidates going unopposed.

The party’s Director of Elections and IT, Mahdi Gibril, said only about 25 aspirants were disqualified during the vetting process, leaving more than 15,000 eligible candidates across the country.

Speaking to Citi  News on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Mr Gibril said the figures represent the highest number of aspirants recorded for the party’s constituency executive elections.Live Radio Streaming

“From what we receive as submitted, we’re talking about almost 15,000-plus that have been able to submit their forms for the elections,” he said.

“However, by the end of the vetting, just about only 25 people were disqualified. So we don’t have a huge number that have been disqualified across the country. So we are still within the 15,000 who are now our candidates for the election.”

He said about 480 candidates will contest their respective positions unopposed.

He noted that the high number of aspirants reflects growing interest in constituency-level positions within the NDC.

“This is also one of the largest numbers for the party where the interest is high,” he said.

Mr Gibril said the increase in interest could partly be linked to the NDC’s return to government, although he stressed that this is the first time the party is holding constituency executive elections while in government.

“If you compare the data, you realise that this time around the interest of people to contest party positions has gone high,” he said.

Candidates who have been declared unopposed are deemed elected, while those facing competition have begun campaigning ahead of the elections.
