The Kansas City Chiefs are still unbeaten, but they had to sweat for it. Kansas City held off the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 at allegiant stadium on Sunday, surviving a frantic finish to improve to 4-0 and stay perfect in the AFC West showdown.
Running back Kenneth Walker III was the difference-maker, piling up a career-high 177 rushing yards on 22 carries and finding the end zone twice. Patrick Mahomes did his part too, throwing for 225 yards and two touchdowns in another strong outing in Las Vegas.
The game turned in the fourth quarter. Walker powered in from two yards out with 3:21 left to put the Chiefs up 23-19. Then came the knockout-looking blow: linebacker Jeffrey Bassa forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Kansas City recovered, and Walker needed just one play to bolt 22 yards for another score and a 30-19 lead.
But the Raiders weren't done. Kirk Cousins, who finished with 365 yards and two touchdowns, marched Las Vegas down the field for a late score and the two-point conversion, trimming the gap to three.
With a chance to tie or win it in the closing seconds, Cousins' final pass was picked off by safety Xavier Nwankpa near the Chiefs' 35-yard line, ending the threat and setting off celebrations on the visiting sideline.
The win makes Kansas City the last unbeaten team in the AFC as it heads into the bye week, and gives the Chiefs an early edge in the division race. It wasn't their prettiest performance, but it was another reminder that they know how to win close games.
For the Raiders, the loss snaps a 3-0 start. Still, the way they battled back showed they will be a tough out in the AFC West all season.
