The 2026/27 MTN FA Cup final will be played over two legs, the first time that has happened in Ghanaian domestic football, the Ghana football association (GFA) has confirmed.
Under the new format, the two finalists will no longer settle things in a single match. They will meet home and away, with each club getting the chance to host a final in front of its own supporters. The first leg is scheduled for June 5-7, 2027, and the return fixture for June 12-13, 2027.
FA Cup Committee Vice Chairman Frank Nelson Nwokolo described the change as a pilot aimed at making the final more inclusive and exciting. It will let both finalists experience a cup final at home, he explained, while taking the competition to more communities across the country.
“The two-legged final is a pilot project; however, if it works, it goes on,” Nwokolo said.
The GFA believes the home-and-away format will generate more interest in the final, boost fan engagement and add a fresh tactical challenge for both teams. It also means supporters of each finalist get to be part of the biggest match of the domestic season.
The 2026/27 edition kicks off with the preliminary round from October 23-26, 2026, featuring clubs from the lower divisions. The 18 Ghana Premier League clubs will join at the Round of 64 stage, before the tournament moves through the round of 32, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals.
Nations FC enter as defending champions after beating Dreams FC 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in last season’s final.
If the trial proves a success, the two-legged final could become a permanent part of the MTN FA Cup, changing how Ghanaian clubs and fans experience the country’s biggest knockout competition.
