An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed, while another is in critical condition following an explosion involving a motor tricycle transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unapproved route in the area, triggering security concerns over the transportation of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes.
Information gathered from security sources in Hamile indicates that the explosion also claimed the lives of the civilians who were transporting the suspected explosives on the motor tricycle.
The civilians were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint.
According to the initial accounts, the motor tricycle was travelling along an unauthorised route when security personnel attempted to intercept it. The occupants allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop, prompting a pursuit that ended in the explosion.
The blast reportedly caught the pursuing personnel, resulting in the death of one Immigration officer and leaving another with critical injuries.
The injured officer is said to be in a serious condition, although further details about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where the officer is receiving treatment have not yet been established.
Hamile, located in the Upper West Region near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso, is an important border community where security agencies maintain surveillance and conduct operations to prevent unauthorised movements and other cross-border security threats.
The use of unapproved routes in border areas can present significant challenges for security agencies, particularly in efforts to monitor the movement of people, goods and potentially hazardous materials.
