The Northern Regional Police Command has descended heavily on the New Patriotic Party‘s Northern regional chairman, Adam Mohammed Bantima Samba following his ‘malnourished’ comments about how he broke the law using NPP influence to secure bail for TaTU TESCON president who was in police custody.
In a statement signed by the acting Public Relations Officer, Bernard Baba Ananga, the police said bail can be granted to a suspect anytime including holidays and weekends while denying that, the regional chairman played any role or influenced the young man’s release.
The attention of the Police Administration has been drawn to a social media publication in which the Northern Regional NPP Chairman, Adam Bantima Samba is seen claiming the effect that he will make a record by breaking the Police principle of not granting or administering bail at night, the police said.
We wish to state categorically that there is no such principle or rule that forbids the Police or clothe the Police with the authority not to grant bail at night, they added.
The statement further described Chairman Samba comments as “erroneous”, adding that he is “ignorant” about the law and how the police administration work and that bail is constitutional right of persons arrested.
The Administration further wishes to state that BAIL is a constitutional right of arrested persons and can be granted at any time of the day, including holidays and weekends, they stated.
The statement made by Mr. Samba is erroneous and a clear demonstration of ignorance of the law on his part and the public should therefore treat it with the contempt it deserves, the statement concluded.
In a video circulating on social media, the NPP Chairman Samba is seen bragging that he used the party’s influence to release the TESCON president from police custody, describing him as “his darling boy”.
He said this when he was addressing the members of the group on the TaTU campus, on August 11, following the suspension of the NPP activities by the group members as a result of the arrest of the TESCON president, Sayibu Ibrahim over a comment regarding the Northern Regional Minister‘s dress on Facebook.
According to the regional chairman, it is not allowed to seek a bail for incarcerated person by the police in the night, but because it was NPP member, he used the party’s influence to secure bail for him.
So when I heard the news one of my darling boys was in police custody, I said that it will never happen. Ghana has a constitution, and the police have their principle – do not bail somebody in the night. But chairman Samba broke it (the law), the NPP chairman bragged.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Saani Alhassan was accused by students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) for allegedly causing the arrest of their colleague, who doubles as President of Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), Sayibu Ibrahim.
