How do you discern if your actions are propelling you towards reverence or pushing you further away from it?

After reflecting on my personal experiences and observing the behaviors of those who command genuine respect, I’ve compiled a list of 7 behaviors to bid farewell to.

If you recognize these behaviors in your life, it might be time for some introspection and change!

1. Saying ‘yes’ when you really mean ‘no’

Being a people pleaser is a common trait amongst those who strive to be liked by everyone.

You might think that saying ‘yes’ to every request or favor will make you more likable and respected.

However, the harsh reality is far from it.

When you consistently agree to things you don’t want to do, you’re not only compromising your authenticity but also setting a precedent for others to take advantage of your kindness.

This can lead to feelings of resentment, burnout, and inevitably, a loss of respect from others.

The key to earning genuine respect lies in establishing clear boundaries and honoring them.

This may involve saying ‘no’ at times, even if it feels uncomfortable initially.

Remember, those who truly care about you will respect your boundaries, and those who don’t were probably not worth pleasing in the first place.

Bidding goodbye to the compulsion of being a constant ‘yes’ person is the first step towards earning authentic respect and cultivating healthier relationships.

2. Neglecting personal growth

One of the most attractive qualities in a person is their dedication to personal development and growth.

This shows that they respect themselves enough to invest time and energy into becoming the best version of themselves.

Conversely, neglecting personal growth can send a message that you lack ambition or are complacent.

This can lead others to perceive you as stagnant, which is unlikely to command much respect.

Personal growth is not about becoming perfect; it’s about consistently striving to improve.

This might mean honing a skill, expanding your knowledge, working on emotional intelligence, or simply cultivating healthier habits.

When you commit to your personal growth, it not only boosts your self-esteem but also earns you the admiration of others.

3. Engaging in gossip

There was a time in my life when I found gossip to be an easy way to bond with others.

The shared secrets, the mutual disdain, it all seemed like harmless chatter at the time. It wasn’t until I found myself on the receiving end of such talk that I realized how destructive this behavior could be.

Gossip, though it may seem like a casual pastime, can seriously damage your reputation.

It’s a behavior that suggests you cannot be trusted with private information and are willing to belittle others for your amusement.

When I decided to steer clear from gossip, I noticed a shift in how people treated me.

Colleagues began to trust me with their concerns, friends opened up more, and I found myself feeling less encumbered by negativity.

If you want genuine respect from others, you must first show respect to them.

This means keeping private conversations private and not engaging in harmful rumors or speculation about others.

It’s a simple change, but it can make a profound difference in how you’re perceived.

4. Constant complaining

According to a study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, constant complaining can physically alter your brain structure in a way that makes negative thinking a default setting.

Not only is this detrimental to your mental health, but it also affects the way people perceive you.

Nobody likes to be around a perpetual complainer.

It can be draining and often creates an atmosphere of negativity.

While expressing discontent is normal, doing so incessantly can make you seem pessimistic and difficult to engage with.

Respected individuals are those who exhibit resilience and positivity in the face of adversity.

They’re solution-oriented and focus on what they can do to improve a situation rather than dwelling on the problem. 

5. Seeking constant validation

A few years ago, I found myself constantly seeking approval from others.

Whether it was my work, my appearance, or my decisions, I felt a constant need for validation.

This need was so powerful that I often compromised my own desires and happiness just to feel accepted.

Over time, I realized that this behavior was not only exhausting but also detrimental to my self-esteem.

People began to see me as insecure and indecisive, which certainly didn’t command much respect.

The day I decided to stop relying on others for validation was the day I truly started living for myself.

I realized that my worth is not determined by others’ opinions of me but by how I value myself.

If you want to be truly respected, you must first respect yourself.

This means making decisions that align with your values and not allowing others’ opinions to sway you.

It’s about being confident in who you are and what you stand for.

Your validation should come from within, not from the approval of others.

6. Taking more than you give

There’s an old saying, “Give and you shall receive”.

But in reality, sometimes we fall into the trap of taking more than we give without even realizing it.

This can be as simple as always being the one to ask for favors but rarely offering help in return, or consistently leaning on others for emotional support without reciprocating.

This imbalance can lead others to feel used or unappreciated, which is unlikely to foster much respect.

True respect comes from demonstrating a sense of fairness and reciprocity in our relationships.

If you find yourself in a constant state of taking, try shifting your focus towards giving.

This doesn’t mean you need to become a doormat; it’s about finding a balance where both parties feel valued and appreciated.

When you become someone who generously gives their time, effort, and kindness, you’ll find that respect naturally follows.

7. Not owning up to your mistakes

We all make mistakes – it’s part of being human.

But how we handle these mistakes can significantly impact how others perceive us.

Denying or deflecting blame can make you seem untrustworthy or immature, whereas owning up to your errors shows integrity and maturity.

I once knew a manager who would never admit when he was wrong.

On the other hand, I’ve also worked with people who readily admitted their mistakes and took steps to rectify them – these individuals always commanded much more respect.

Saying goodbye to the fear of admitting mistakes is an essential step towards gaining true respect.

Understand that mistakes are opportunities for growth and learning rather than something to be ashamed of.

By owning up to your errors and taking responsibility for your actions, you show others that you’re not only honest but also committed to personal growth – two qualities that are highly respected.


Respect comes from within

In conclusion, if you want to be truly respected in life, it’s important to let go of certain bad behaviors.
