LGBTQI+ debate billed for next week

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has issued a resolute instruction to the Business Committee of the house, commanding them to meticulously schedule a compelling debate on the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021.

The highly anticipated clash of opinions is poised to ignite the parliamentary floor next week, potentially taking place on either Tuesday or Thursday. The weighty pronouncement was delivered by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, resonating throughout the chamber with palpable significance.

On the 31st of March 2023, the contentious bill arrived at Parliament’s doorstep, painstakingly crafted by the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee. At its core, the bill seeks to navigate the complex terrain surrounding LGBT activities. It boldly proposes the criminalisation of such activities, while concurrently striving to safeguard the well-being of children and victims ensnared in these acts.

During the deliberations on the Business Statement presented by the esteemed Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a captivating discourse ensued. The First Deputy Speaker, entrusted with relaying the Speaker’s unwavering directives, adeptly conveyed the message to the rapt audience.

With an air of gravitas, he underscored the profound interest held by numerous civil society organisations, astute political observers, and erudite constitutional experts. He cautioned that their attentive gaze would steadfastly remain fixed upon the venerable chambers, meticulously scrutinising the imminent proceedings.

Thus, the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 stands poised to grace the coveted order paper for the forthcoming parliamentary sessions.

This grand spectacle is set to unfold on either the illustrious Tuesday of 27th June or the distinguished Thursday of 29th June, leaving both proponents and critics eagerly anticipating this momentous clash of ideologies.
