Northern Regional House of Chiefs in ruins; shame on you ~ leaders told

A celebrated media practitioner with Radio Tamale, Mohammed Abdul Dahim has taken on the leaders of Dagbon, Nanung and Konkombas over their ability to renovate the Northern Regional House of Chiefs situated in Tamale and put it to good use.

His comments came on the back of the recent outbursts by chiefs at a meeting last week in the facility.

According to Sheik Dahim, “it is shameful, considering the current state of the Northern Region House of Chief’s office in Tamale the contractor has left the site of the project with the complaint that there is no money, he has not been given money, even when we came for a meeting there the last time, there were no Washrooms, no fans, no Offices for the staff to work”.

“Indeed it is shameful, considering the current state of the Northern Region House of Chief’s office in Tamale, apparently the contractor has left the site of the project with the complaint that there is no money, he has not been given money, even when we came for the meeting there is no toilet, no Washrooms, no fans, no Offices for the staff to work when we have leaders who should have known what best to do about this our situation, I’m serious it is a shame”.

This was part of a statement from the Principal Kingmaker of Dagbong, Naa Yab Kugnaa Abdulai Adam when I had an exclusive interview with him on the state of the Northern Region House of chiefs in Tamale over the weekend.

Naa Yab Kugnaa Abdulai disclosed this to me after he received a 30 Seater Coastal Bus to assist in the Operational duties and assignment of the Northern Region House of Chiefs on behalf of the King and Overlord of Dagbong, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II by the Executive Director of VIP JEOUN Transport Company Limited, Mr.Yaw Amponsah Marfo well know as Yesu Dea(Agya Wiase).

The Presentation ceremony was also graced by Naa Bakpem Yoo-Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani,Nyab Nanton Naa Bawa,Naa Baperi Sagnari-Naa Amb.Yakubu Abdulai,Nyab Bakpab-Naa,reps of Nyab Kumbun-Naa Iddi Abu,Nyab Gukpe-Naa Alhaji Alhassan and many other sub-Chiefs were present to witness the August ceremony.

Back to the agenda, however, the state of the Northern Region House of Chiefs is of great concern and worry to many Chiefs, opinion leaders and citizens of Dagbong, Nanung, the Konkomba, Basalisi communities and many other groups both home and abroad and indeed many of us who are son’s and daughters of Dagbong.

Though it is worth commending government and the Ministry of Chieftaincy affairs for the bold and splendid initiative to do the renovations and maintain the house to a befitting standard, it is however embarrassing, shameful and disrespectful to our chiefs and people abandon the project at this time.

These are times Dagbong and the Northern region need the facility most to deliberate on key issues of great essence to the Peace, development and progress of the land when we have just smoked the peace pipe and Dagbong is no more into war with each other.

We all know of the constitutional amendments of the Dagbong 1930 Constitution,Chieftaincy conflicts, land disputes and a charter to the sustainable peace process of Dagbong.

We can not let go, the government has done it partly over the period but that is not enough for it to say there are no funds for the Northern Region House of Chiefs project to be stalled and abandoned at these critical times in Dagbong.

The Dagbong Traditional Council over the period was compelled to hold its meeting at the Global Dream Hotel and other places outside the house because the condition is unfavourable and we can not risk the precious lives of the Chiefs, subordinates and the staff of the Northern Region House of Chiefs.

Again I understand the Dagbong Traditional Council office in the Yendi Municipality is also in a sorry and dilapidated state. The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) has a significant role to play in giving it a befitting lift to the required standards but what is the MCE doing or what has he been doing over the current situation of the office, indeed it will shame and embarrassing If he sits aloof without any intervention.

Meanwhile, I toured around the renovating Northern Region House of Chiefs after my interaction with Naa yab KugNaa and many other Chiefs from the Northern Region House of Chiefs and it was terrible and worrying that the Chiefs and People including myself could risk our lives in this worn-out and dilapidated old-aged structure called Northern Region House of Chief’s office, though the program was a short one and lasted for some few minutes, yes indeed Naa yab Kugnaa is right by saying it is shame, one could see a structure that is in die-need and calling for total demolition.

The roof of the facility is without ceilings as ‘naked’ wires perch on the walls and the structure exposes danger to its inhabitants.

Some of its furniture is worn-out whiles some of the staff are pegged on a Porch for their clerical and administrative duties others are using the trees for their work and at times are subject to the mercy of the weather, especially this rainy season.

Also, the only vehicle the management and staff of the Northern Region House of Chiefs are using for administrative works is completely out and has even broken down for some time now because according to its mechanics the engine is dead.
Do they have the capacity and where with all government institutions to fix that?
Why can’t they do that?
Do they receive subventions from the government? or do they have a system of generating funds internally?
Are the allocations and donations they receive from government and philanthropic bodies enough to cater for the house’s needs and demands?
What is the government doing to complete this Northern Region House of Chiefs office project?
When are we going to see the contractor or a new contractor back on site to complete and hand over the project?
This and many other questions are begging for answers from the government to reposition the House to its rightful and dignifying position.

Against this, I urge and call on all our Northern region MP’s to look into the Northern Region House of Chiefs office issue, with a specific call on the Minority Leader and Tamale South MP, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Hon.Farouk Aliu Mahama,MP Yendi Constituency,Tamale Central MP,Hon.Mutala Ibrahim Mohammed, MP for Tolon Constituency, Hon.Habib Iddrisu(Soyalana) Tamale North MP Hon.Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini,Hon.Adam Mohammed Amin Anta and Hon.Lawyer Hassan Tampuli, MP’s for Karaga and Gusheigu Constituency respectively as well as Hon.Dominic Nitiwul MP for Bimbilla Constituency who doubles as Defence Minister, MP for Sagnarigu Hon.Alhaji A.B.A.Fuseini,andHon.Dr.Hamza Adam and Hon.Yakubu Abdulai Wunbenkpang, MP’s for Kumbungu and Savelugu Constituency respectively and among other legislators from the Northern sector I call for their unanimous and kind interventions.

Also with this that I wish to re-ignite the call by Naa Yab Kugnaa Abdulai and many other Chiefs, people both home and abroad to the landlords of the country H.E President Nana Akufo Addo and H.E Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia to urgently intervene through the needed stakeholders and Ministers in charge to allocate the required funds to the contractor to support the timely completion of the project and hand over same to the chiefs and good people of the Northern region.

With this, in the end, the glory and blessings will be to them and all of us.
Thanks so much for reading.
