Organised Labour Suspends Intended Strike

Organised labour has suspended an intended strike after an emergency meeting with the Council of State.

They had threatened to embark on an indefinite strike on Monday, July 10, 2023, due to the dismissal of three workers by the management of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited.

The three are also union leaders of organised labour.

It is reported that other union members were also subjected to abuses by the management, largely made up of Chinese nationals.

Since March, Organised labour called for the reinstatement of the three embattled union leaders, but all efforts have proven futile.

Several meetings between the organised labour and the company to resolve the matter have also been unsuccessful.

The group leaders left disappointed in the last meeting held on Thursday, July 6.

Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the spokesperson of the group, insisted after the meeting that the strike would continue as planned.

In response to the escalating situation, the Council of State intervened and called an emergency meeting with organised labour after the National Labour Commission (NLC) failed to calm the situation.

After the meeting, the group decided to suspend the intended strike.

Meanwhile, the Council of State has instructed Sunon Asogli Power to reinstate the three union leaders within five working days.
