Scale of flooding bigger than crippled economy can bear, declare State of Emergency – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has called on the government to declare a State of Emergency over the devastating effect of the Akosombo Dam Spillage.

In a Facebook post the former President indicated that he will recommend for a State Emergency in the affected areas in order to request assistance from multilateral and other partners.

“It is clear that the scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta River is bigger than our crippled economy can bear.

“I recommend to Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners immediately,” Mr. Mahama advised.

Several Communities around the Volta Lake have been submerged in water, displacing many residents.

Flooding due to the spillage has forced many communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region to evacuate, leaving them with no choice but to try and save what’s left of their belongings.

The flooding has so far displaced over 26,000 residents in parts of the Eastern and Volta regions with no end in sight.
