School Feeding Caterers Call Off Nationwide Strike

Caterers under the government’s School Feeding Programme have called off their nationwide strike following agreements reached with the government.

According to the National President of the Ghana School Feeding Caterers’ Association, Charlotte Ashiakie Asante, caterers are to return to schools upon re-opening next month.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, June 21, Mrs Asante said, “Thankfully, our cry to the government, I must say, has yielded some good results, even though negotiations with the government are yet to be completed, especially on our demand for increment.”

She added that further negotiations would continue despite the strike being called off.

“Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, let me officially announce that the nationwide strike embarked upon by our caterers across the entire country has now been called off.

“We entreat all our caterers to go back to work when school re-opens next week.

“We sincerely apologise to all our beneficiary school children, teacher and parents for any inconveniences caused by our long strike, which was beyond our control,” she said.

However, she noted that the association still stands by their earlier demand for three Ghana cedis increments in the feeding fee.

The caterers have been on strike since April 2023 over unpaid arrears. They have been demanding their arrears and an increment in the feeding fee per pupil to GH¢3.
