Striking teachers defer to Organised Labour for every engagement on COLA

The striking teacher unions have deferred every discussion on the cost of living allowance (COLA) to Organised Labour. Previous meetings with government have seen the teachers unable to reach a consensus.

They have stormed out of such meetings, complaining that government has failed on such occasions to make any proposals.

The teachers like most labour unions are demanding 20 percent allowance to cushion them in the face of the current harsh economic conditions.

But in a letter to the sector ministers of Education and Employment and Labour Relations as well as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the teachers said going forward, all interactions over COLA “should be referred to the Leadership of Organised Labour”.

The teacher unions are the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-G).

Members have been on strike since Monday, July 4.

Organised Labour is set to meet government on Thursday, July 14 for a discussion on the demanded allowance.
