Tamale Aboabo timber market, gov’t takes over for redevelopment ~ Abu Jinapor

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, has informed Parliament that the government has designated the Tamale Aboabo Timber Market land for redevelopment.

He made this announcement in response to a question from Mr Suhuyini Alhassan Sayibu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North.

According to the Minister, the Tamale Aboabo Timber Market, which spans approximately seven acres, is located on public land along the Tamale-Daboya main road.

The government intends to redevelop underutilized public lands as part of its Urban Redevelopment Scheme to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development and enhance the appearance of cities.

Mr Jinapor revealed that a portion of the land measuring approximately 1.38 acres has been leased to Fatuh-Kareeban Company for 50 years, effective from August 29, 2020.

The lessee is expected to develop the land for commercial purposes to benefit the people of Tamale and its environs.

To commence with the redevelopment, the lessee needs vacant possession of the granted land, which will require the removal of some structures.

However, the Minister clarified that this is not a demolition exercise as there are no permanent structures on the land. Some kiosks or containers may be affected, but the Lands Commission and the lessee will work with those affected to ensure a smooth process.

Mr Jinapor emphasized that the redevelopment is necessary to optimize the use of public lands for the benefit of Ghanaians and to enhance the aesthetics of the nation’s cities.

Similar redevelopment exercises are being carried out in Accra, specifically at the Aviation City, as well as in Kumasi, Cape Coast, and Takoradi.

The Minister called on the House, particularly the MP for Tamale North, to support the government’s efforts in maximizing the efficient use of public lands.
