Two Brothers Drown In Owabi River Following Torrential Rainfall

Two brothers are reportedly dead after drowning in the Owabi River at Atafoa in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti following heavy rains on Wednesday evening.

Kwaku Aboagye, 40, and Kwame Asuman, 50, were trapped under the river for several hours as residents in the area found it difficult to locate them under the water.

Information gathered revealed that security officers who rushed to the scene, including police officers, fire service officers and National Disaster Management Organisation NADMO personnel, were helpless as they lacked life jackets and divers to rescue the trapped men.

The Assembly Member of Abrepo Electoral Area, Daniel Acheampong, revealed that Kwaku Aboagye was the first to be swept away by the heavy floods.

Afterwards, his family came to the river this morning to look for his body upon the instructions of a priest.

There, his elder brother, Kwame Asuman, also fell into the river and drowned in the full glare of the family members and the security officials.

The two have since gone missing as of the time of reporting.

The rains on Wednesday also caused havoc in the Greater Accra Region.

Floodwaters at Peace Town, a suburb of Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality, swept away a mother and her two children.

According to reports, they were escaping the flash waters that had entered their house but were swept away.

According to a witness, Nii Quashon, they were screaming for help, but there was nothing the people could do.

He said they have mounted a search for the mother and children and hope to find them alive.
