The Northern Regional 1st Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Rufai Ahmed, popularly known as Velim has condemned the statement by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional chairman, Mohammed Bantima Samba that he used the party’s influence to secure bail for TaTU TESCON president.
Speaking exclusively to radio Tamale 91.7 on the matter, Alhaji Velim described the statement by Chairman Samba as a “worrying development” for the future of Ghana, adding that it sends a bad signal to youth looking up to the leaders of this country as their role models.
He used the opportunity to call on the Northern Regional Police to arrest the NPP regional chairman, saying that this is the only way to redeem the image of the police services.
The comment from the NPP chairman is irresponsible and should be condemned by every Ghanaian who meant well for the country. To admit that you broke the law to release a criminal from cells is a serious statement and the police should not take it kindly, the NDC vice chairman said.
We can’t claim to be building a decent society when people regarded as leaders don’t respect the law. What are we then training our future leaders to be? he asked.
In a video circulating on social media, NPP Chairman Samba is seen bragging that he used the party’s influence to release the TESCON president from police custody two days ago.
He made the statement while addressing some members of the group at the TaTU campus, August 11, 2022, following the suspension of the NPP activities by the group members as a result of the arrest of the TESCON president, Sayibu Ibrahim over a comment regarding the Northern Regional Minister’s dress on Facebook.
According to the regional chairman, it is not allowed to seek bail for an incarcerated person by the police at the night, but because he was an NPP member, he used the party’s influence to secure bail for him.
So when I heard the news one of my darling boys was in police custody, I said that it will never happen. Ghana has a constitution, and the police have their principle – do not bail somebody in the night. But chairman Samba broke it (the law), the NPP chairman bragged.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Saani Alhassan was accused by students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) for allegedly causing the arrest of their colleague, who doubles as President of Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), Sayibu Ibrahim.
Meanwhile, the group also said for the intervention of the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, national chairman, Stephen Ntim and the party’s National Organiser, their colleague would have stayed in the cells.
