National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called for an end to attempts to place Dr Kwame Nkrumah on the same footing as other nationalists in Ghana’s independence struggle, insisting that he deserves sole recognition as the founder of Ghana.

According to Mr Asiedu Nketiah, Dr Nkrumah’s contribution went beyond the struggle for independence, as he played the decisive role in bringing together territories that previously existed as separate entities to form modern Ghana.

He made the remarks on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the launch of NkrumahFest, an initiative by Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah to promote the study of Dr Nkrumah’s works and preserve his legacy.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah argued that before Dr Nkrumah emerged on the political scene, the Gold Coast, Ashanti Kingdom, Northern Territories and Trans-Volta Togoland existed as separate entities.

He said Dr Nkrumah’s role in bringing those territories together justified recognising him as the sole founder of Ghana.

“I thought that Nkrumah deserves to hold that single title as the founder of Ghana. Before Nkrumah came to the scene, there was nothing like Ghana,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah further rejected comparisons between Dr Nkrumah and other politicians or nationalists who contributed to the country’s independence struggle.

“No other politician and no other nationalist can compare themselves to the one and only Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah,” he stated.

He said NkrumahFest would provide an opportunity to deepen public understanding of Dr Nkrumah’s works and ensure that his contribution to Ghana’s history remains part of national discourse.
