Ghana unveils December in GH 2026 events calendar

  • Ghana unveils December in GH 2026 events calendar

Ghana has unveiled the official calendar of activities for December in GH 2026, with events scheduled from December 1, 2026, to January 3, 2027, under the Black Star Experience initiative.

The calendar was launched at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra under the theme “Ghana to the World," with activities expected to showcase the country’s culture, heritage, tourism, and creative industries.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, urged stakeholders to focus on the opportunities the festive season presents rather than debates surrounding the “Detty December” label.

She said the season should create economic opportunities for local communities and benefit tour operators, hoteliers, content creators, musicians, fashion designers, artisans, and young entrepreneurs.

The activities lined up for the period include music performances, festivals, cultural exhibitions, heritage experiences, food and cuisine showcases, fashion events, arts and crafts exhibitions, and community celebrations across the country.

Ghana is also collaborating with the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) to host the inaugural African Festival of Arts, Culture, and Creativity (A-FESTA) from December 9 to 11, 2026.

The festival is expected to bring together stakeholders from across Africa and the diaspora to celebrate African creativity, encourage cultural exchange, and attract investment into the creative economy.

The minister called on event organizers and businesses to maintain high service standards, ensure visitor safety and adopt reasonable pricing during the festive season.

She also encouraged visitors to explore destinations beyond Accra, stressing the need to spread tourism activities and their economic benefits across all 16 regions.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, said December in GH provides an opportunity for visitors to experience Ghanaian music, festivals, heritage, cuisine, fashion, and community celebrations.

She urged event organizers to give Ghanaian performers prominent roles and fair compensation, while encouraging businesses to source goods and services locally to ensure that more of the revenue generated during the season stays in the country.

According to her, more than 150 events have been registered nationwide for the 2026 festive season, with over 100 taking place in Accra.

One of the events included in the calendar is Culturefest GH ’26, scheduled for December 24 to 26 at the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture in Cantonments.

The event, themed “Canvas & Rhythm: Where Art Meets Sound," will feature activities centered on art, crafts, fashion, food, real estate, music, and an artisan market.

The December in the GH calendar is intended to promote Ghana’s cultural and heritage tourism, stimulate economic activity, and strengthen connections with the global African community during the festive period.
