The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, has participated in a two-day National Consultative Workshop on the role of local governments in the rehabilitation and reintegration of returnees and former violent extremist offenders.

The workshop, held in Accra from July 1 to 2, 2026, brought together Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, representatives of government institutions, development partners, security agencies, and civil society organisations to explore strategies for strengthening local government participation in preventing violent extremism through a whole-of-society approach.

The high-level engagement was convened by the Strong Cities Network with support from the German Federal Foreign Office and focused on promoting collaboration among key stakeholders to enhance community resilience, strengthen local governance, and foster social cohesion.

Speaking after the workshop, Alhaji Takoro described the event as a valuable platform for constructive dialogue, knowledge sharing, and the exchange of practical experiences on sustainable approaches to rehabilitation and reintegration.

He noted that participants examined practical interventions aimed at reinforcing collaborative mechanisms for preventing violent extremism while supporting the successful reintegration of returnees and former offenders into their communities.

According to the Tamale MCE, the discussions reaffirmed that effective rehabilitation and reintegration require coordinated efforts involving government institutions, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, civil society organisations, community leaders, and development partners.

He emphasised that local governments have a critical role to play in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development by leading inclusive initiatives that strengthen community resilience and social cohesion.

Alhaji Takoro reaffirmed the commitment of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to working with all relevant stakeholders to advance peacebuilding initiatives and support national efforts aimed at preventing violent extremism through inclusive local governance.
