Tamale, Ghana — July 23, 2026: The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to accelerating infrastructure development at the University for Development Studies (UDS), particularly the Yendi Campus, following a meeting with the university's newly inducted Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Muniru.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, focused on strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening UDS as a leading institution for higher education, research, and innovation in Northern Ghana.

A major highlight of the discussions was the accelerated completion of the UDS Yendi Campus. Hon. Haruna Iddrisu assured the Vice-Chancellor of the government's determination to provide additional infrastructure to fast-track the project.

He noted that the commitment also serves as a tribute to the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, whose unwavering advocacy and vision were instrumental in the establishment and development of the campus.

The Minister and the Vice-Chancellor also explored plans to expand the UDS Teaching Hospital, with the aim of increasing the training capacity for medical doctors while enhancing healthcare delivery across the Savannah Ecological Zone and Northern Ghana.

The proposed expansion is expected to strengthen medical education and improve access to quality healthcare services in the region.

In addition, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu underscored the need to amend the recently enacted UDS Act to review the composition of the University's Governing Council.

He explained that aligning the council's structure with the new legal framework would enhance institutional governance and support the university's long-term growth and development.

The meeting reflects the government's continued commitment to strengthening tertiary education, expanding access to quality healthcare training, and positioning UDS as a premier centre of academic excellence and regional development.

The discussions are expected to pave the way for closer collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the University for Development Studies in advancing key infrastructure, governance, and educational reforms.
