Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has unveiled Ghana’s 25-player squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in Morocco.

The Swedish tactician has opted for a combination of experienced campaigners and promising young talents as Ghana prepares to battle Africa’s best women’s football teams for continental supremacy.

The squad includes three goalkeepers: Afia Amenyeku of FK Apolonia, Cynthia Konlan Fiindib of Samatex Ladies and Osman Huzeimah of Jonina Ladies.

In defence, Björkegren has named Abena Anoma Opoku, Alex Tay, Anasteshia Achiaa, Benedicte Simon, Comfort Yeboah, Josephine Bonsu, captain Portia Boakye and Susan Amaduah.

The midfield and attacking departments feature several familiar names within the Black Queens setup, including Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, Evelyn Badu, Grace Asantewaa, Princella Adubea, Jennifer Cudjoe, Princess Marfo, Stella Nyamekye, Alice Kusi, Linda Owusuansah, Wasima Mohammed and Sharon Sampson.

Veteran forward Doris Boaduwaa is among the attackers selected, alongside Abi Kim and Ajegipina Zakaria, as Ghana looks to pose a serious threat in the tournament.

Björkegren’s side enters the competition with renewed confidence after securing a bronze medal under his leadership, as the coach continues his rebuilding project with the national women’s team.

The 2026 WAFCON will carry added significance, serving as a qualification route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ghana will be aiming for a strong campaign as the Black Queens seek to revive their historic status as one of Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

The Black Queens have been drawn in Group D alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde, with the group stage scheduled to run from July 26 to August 6.

The quarter-finals will be played on August 8 and 9, while the semi-finals are set for August 12. The World Cup qualification playoffs will follow on August 13, before the tournament concludes with the final on Sunday, August 16, in Rabat.

The 2026 edition of the competition will also feature a record prize purse of $5.8 million, with the champions set to take home a historic $2 million reward.

Ghana will hope to make a strong statement in Morocco as the Black Queens chase their first WAFCON title since the tournament’s inception.
