The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision declaring the delegates system used by political parties in selecting presidential and parliamentary candidates unconstitutional, describing the ruling as one that aligns with the party’s long-standing position on expanding internal democracy.

According to the party, the judgment will not disrupt its preparations for future internal elections, insisting it has previously embraced broader participation in the selection of its presidential and parliamentary candidates.

Speaking to Channel One  News, the NDC’s Acting IT Director, Jibril Mahdi, said the party had consistently supported reforms to the delegates system and was comfortable with the Supreme Court’s decision.News archive access

“I will state that it will not have any effect because we are yet to prepare our guidelines towards the presidential and parliamentary elections. The NDC was already in support of this ruling,” he said.

Mahdi explained that the party’s support for reforms dates back to the aftermath of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, when the NDC called for changes to Ghana’s electoral processes to help reduce violence and strengthen democratic participation.

He said the party had advocated a new framework that would make internal elections more inclusive, adding that the court’s ruling reinforces those efforts.
