MTN Ghana trains fleet drivers on new road traffic regulations

  • MTN Ghana trains fleet drivers on new road traffic regulations

MTN Ghana has trained its fleet drivers on Ghana’s new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026, as part of efforts to improve compliance and reduce preventable road crashes.

The training held in Tamale the Northern regional capital was organised in partnership with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

It brought together executives and other employees who operate MTN vehicles, with discussions focused on the requirements of Legislative Instrument 2519 and the responsibilities of drivers on the road.

Acting Director of Vehicle Inspection and Registration at the DVLA, Kwesi Bona Otuo-Srebour, commended MTN for adopting a preventive approach to road safety.

“The importance of this exercise is to take enforcement away from reactive response to challenges to preventive response,” he said.

He urged other corporate organisations to train their drivers on changes to road traffic regulations and promote responsible driving practices.

“The end result is very simple: safety on our roads, safer vehicles on the part of DVLA and safer drivers who will use our roads,” he said.

Digital enforcement

The new regulations introduce additional obligations for motorists and provide for stronger enforcement of traffic offences, including the use of automated systems.

ACP Alexander Obeng, National Director of Research at the Police MTTD, said digital tools were being developed to support the issuance of traffic offence notices and improve enforcement.

“Automated road traffic offences and fines allow the police to use information technology software and hardware applications to deliver traffic services,” he said.

ACP Obeng said the police were building capacity and training personnel to implement the new system effectively.

He said the engagement with MTN drivers was part of a wider public education campaign aimed at helping key road users understand the new regulations and improve their safety practices.

“Through this collaboration, we will be able to build safer road usage for all of us and work towards achieving the national target of reducing road crashes by more than 50 per cent every year,” he said.

Officials said driver training, vehicle maintenance and compliance with road safety regulations remained essential to reducing deaths and injuries on Ghana’s roads.
