The Nalerigu Youth Association (NAYA) has issued a formal statement expressing concern over the suspension of Mr. Ibrahim Chimsi, the Principal of the Nalerigu Nursing and Midwifery College. The suspension followed the visit of the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to the institution earlier this year.

In a press conference held on Friday, August 28, 2026, NAYA acknowledged the authority of the Ministry of Health but questioned the circumstances surrounding the suspension, which was reportedly based on allegations that the college admitted students beyond its approved quota. The association emphasized that if this was a first-time infraction, alternative measures such as warnings should have been considered before resorting to suspension.

The association highlighted that the Nayiri, traditional overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, had sent delegations on three separate occasions to the Ministry of Health to appeal for the Principal’s reinstatement. According to NAYA, these appeals have yet to be satisfactorily addressed.

NAYA also expressed concern over the lack of prior engagement with the traditional authority before the Minister’s official visit, stressing that the Nayiri is a key stakeholder in the development of the college and the region. The association called for meaningful dialogue among the Ministry, traditional leaders, and other relevant stakeholders to foster understanding and peaceful resolution.

In their statement, NAYA proposed a two-week period for the authorities to resolve the matter amicably. They warned that if the issue remains unresolved after this timeframe, they would consider lawful and peaceful avenues to seek a fair resolution. The association reiterated that it does not support violence or unlawful conduct and remains committed to peaceful dialogue.

The association emphasized the importance of the college to Ghana’s health sector and urged that concerns related to admissions and management be handled through established procedures to ensure fairness and accountability.

In conclusion, NAYA reaffirmed its respect for government institutions, traditional authorities, and college staff, expressing hope that sincere engagement and mutual respect will lead to a positive outcome that benefits the institution and the community of Nalerigu.
