Gbewaa College of Education lecturer dies after alleged military assault

A lecturer at the Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga in the Upper East Region, Issaka Abdulai, has allegedly been beaten to death by military personnel operating in the area.

Management of the College, in a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, said Mr Abdulai died after he was allegedly assaulted by military personnel on the night of Friday, September 11.

 

The College did not provide details of what led to the alleged assault or the circumstances surrounding his death.

“Management is saddened to announce the death of Mr. Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department. Mr Issaka Abdulai was beaten to death by the military in Bawku last night” the statement said.

 

However, sources indicate that Mr Abdulai was allegedly apprehended while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.

News of his death triggered protests in Pusiga on Saturday morning, with residents reportedly blocking roads and burning tyres to express their displeasure over the incident and the conduct of military personnel in the community.

The incident has raised concerns among residents over the treatment of civilians during security operations in the area.

Management of Gbewaa College of Education has expressed concern over the death of its lecturer, while details of any investigation into the alleged assault have yet to emerge.
