Ayariga announces live coverage of MMDA meetings

  • Ayariga announces live coverage of MMDA meetings

Local Government Minister, Mahama Ayariga has announced plans to introduce live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The initiative, being developed in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), is aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in local governance.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, Mr Ayariga said the programme is being rolled out in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

He said broadcasting proceedings of local government meetings would give citizens greater access to discussions and decisions at the local level, while allowing for increased public scrutiny of the work of MMDAs.

The Minister said the initiative is also expected to generate greater public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate actively in the decentralisation process.

According to him, broader access to local government proceedings will help strengthen the relationship between citizens and local institutions and promote a more open system of governance.

“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable, and responsive local institutions,” he said.
