The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to collaborate with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to collaborate with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, Ayariga said the initiative is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

“I have engaged with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs),” he said.

According to the Minister, the initiative will also serve as a platform to deepen public understanding of the decentralisation system and encourage citizens to engage more actively with their local authorities.

Mr Ayariga said the programme is expected to generate greater public interest and participation in the upcoming District-Level Elections.

“We also hope this initiative will generate greater public interest in and participation in the upcoming District-Level Elections, while encouraging more citizens to actively engage in the decentralisation process,” he said.

The Minister said the government remained committed to building local institutions that are transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of citizens.

“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions,” Mr Ayariga added.
