NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to rebuild the La Beach economy and safeguard the thousands of jobs supported by businesses operating within the area.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia described La Beach as a socially, economically and culturally significant enclave that has developed into one of Ghana’s vibrant beach destinations.
He said the beach has become an important source of livelihood, particularly for young people, while also serving as a venue for international events and entertainment activities that have contributed to Ghana’s tourism appeal.
Dr Bawumia expressed concern over the demolition of the beach, describing the destruction as painful and surprising, particularly the reported destruction of movable assets that he said could have been removed by their owners.
He also recalled the role La Beach played during the previous NPP administration, saying the area was among the key locations that supported activities associated with Ghana’s “Year of Return” and related programmes that attracted international attention.
According to Dr Bawumia, his administration would seek to transform La Beach into a major tourism and economic enclave while working with businesses and residents in the area.
He outlined five key interventions:
- Rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to individual businesses operating there.
- Redesign the beach space to meet appropriate standards and support operators to run their businesses effectively.
- Secure space for Labadi Beach Hotel and other major establishments, while allowing smaller businesses to coexist as part of the broader beach ecosystem.
- Engage the owners of Laboma Beach to resolve outstanding issues, regularise their operations and ensure compliance with the law.
- Address challenges around the lagoon, including flooding and environmental concerns.
Dr Bawumia said he remained committed to protecting and improving the livelihoods of people whose businesses depend on the beach economy.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he said.
The statement was issued from Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
