The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested some suspected illegal miners following an operation at Subin Akwaaboso in the Central Region, during which its personnel reportedly faced considerable resistance from a group of individuals armed with cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons.

The arrests were made on Sunday afternoon, November 1, 2026, during an enforcement operation involving NAIMOS personnel and members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS).

According to a statement issued by NAIMOS on Monday, November 2, the group confronted the enforcement team, creating risks for personnel and other people present at the scene.

"During the operation, the NAIMOS personnel and members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) faced considerable resistance from a group of individuals, some of whom were wielding cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons which created risk for the personnel and others present," portions of the statement read.

The operation was led by the Director of Operations of NAIMOS, Colonel K. S. Appiah, who reportedly exercised maximum restraint and took measures to prevent the situation from escalating.

NAIMOS further warned that individuals suspected of attacking its personnel or obstructing lawful enforcement operations would be referred to the relevant authorities for the necessary action.

" NAIMOS wishes to reiterate that any obstruction of lawful enforcement is a serious concern and individuals suspected of attacking personnel or obstructing operations will be referred to the relevant authorities for necessary action. "

The Secretariat stressed that it would continue to operate within the law while taking necessary and proportionate measures to protect its personnel, accompanying journalists and members of the public.

It also urged community leaders and residents to support lawful enforcement operations and channel their concerns through appropriate means.

NAIMOS said it would continue working with security agencies, regulatory institutions and local communities, with the support of government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to protect the environment and sustain gains made in the fight against illegal mining.
