  • Regent of Dagbon leads chiefs to thank Bawumia; Bawumia assures him of full support for Dagbon peace

The Regent of the Dagbang Kingdom, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu II, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, led a delegation of paramount chiefs and elders to pay a courtesy call on the former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at his office in Accra.

The purpose of the visit by the Regent was to thank the former Vice President for his vital role in helping to bring peace to Dagbon and also for attending the funeral performance of the late Ya-Naa, Mahama Abukari II.

In his remarks, Dr. Bawumia described the visit as a great honour and a blessing.

“My father, the Kampakuya Naa II, and his paramount chiefs who have accompanied him, as well as the elders and other chiefs who are here, I am most appreciative and most grateful for the courtesy of this visit. It is an honour done to me personally. It is not normal to have someone of the stature of the Kampakuya-Naa come to your office. It’s a blessing,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Bawumia said he was particularly gladdened by the Regent’s commitment to uphold peace in Dagbon.

He recalled that following the performance of the final funeral rites of the late Yaa-Naa, which he attended, the Regent made a statement that he is very committed to the peace in Dagbon and will follow the roadmap that has been laid for the succession to maintain peace in the Kingdom.

“That really gladdened my heart and I want to thank him so much because with peace you will have development,” he stated.

The former Vice President stressed that no development can take place without peace.

“Whatever we want to see, whether it’s health care, education, farming, whatever development we want cannot take place without peace. And when there was peace in Dagbon you saw that impact. We had Tamale International Airport, you had the interchange, [you had roads like the Eastern Corridor road] all through, and that is just a little bit. Once we have more peace, sustained peace, more development will come,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia assured the Regent of his full and unwavering support.

“And I’m assuring the Kampakuya-Naa that as his son he can always count on me. Whenever he calls me I’ll be there for him. In whatever way he wants me I’ll be there for him,” he added.
