Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable Portugal career spanning more than two decades. The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, saying he would hand back Portugal's iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.
Ronaldo bows out as the highest-scoring player in men's international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. He also holds the record for the most international appearances by a male footballer.
His Portugal career began in 2003, with the forward going on to become the country's most influential player and captain. He led Portugal to their first major international trophy at Euro 2016, despite being forced off injured in the final against France.
Ronaldo later helped Portugal win the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and the competition again in 2025, taking his international trophy haul to three.
He featured at six World Cups, becoming the first male player to achieve the milestone, and scored in five different editions.
His final appearance at the tournament came in July, when Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had previously indicated that the 2026 World Cup would be his last, but remained undecided about continuing with Portugal after the tournament.
Ronaldo's retirement closes one of the most decorated international careers in football history, leaving behind records for goals and appearances that will be difficult to surpass.
