The High Court in Tamale has granted an interim injunction restraining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Tolon Constituency Election Committee from conducting the upcoming Tolon Constituency Executives Elections for a period of ten days.
The order was issued by His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew on July 7, 2026, following an ex parte application filed by Abdul-Somed Chantiwuni Mohammed, a member of the NPP in the Tolon Constituency.

According to court documents, the plaintiff challenged his disqualification from contesting the position of Constituency Organizer and sought the intervention of the court pending the determination of the matter.
In his application, Abdul-Somed argued that he had exhausted the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms but remained dissatisfied with the outcome. He alleged that the vetting process breached principles of natural justice, claiming that he was not given adequate time to respond to petitions filed against his candidature.
He further contended that some members of the vetting committee were biased and acted as judges in their own cause despite objections raised during the process.
The applicant maintained that he is a member of the NPP in good standing and had fulfilled all requirements outlined in the party's regulations governing constituency executive elections. He presented evidence including his party membership records, payment of dues, nomination documents, and records of his active participation in party activities over the years.

Counsel for the applicant, Abraham Nayaam Damtar, argued before the court that allowing the elections to proceed without the participation of his client would permanently affect his constitutional and political rights to contest and be voted for in a free and fair election. He further submitted that there were substantial legal issues requiring judicial determination and therefore urged the court to preserve the status quo pending the hearing of an interlocutory injunction application.
After hearing the application, the court granted the interim injunction and ordered that the NPP, its agents, assigns, privies, and any persons acting under its authority refrain from conducting the Tolon Constituency Executives Elections for ten days.
The court also issued a penal notice warning that failure to comply with the order could result in contempt proceedings, including fines, imprisonment, or other sanctions deemed appropriate by the court.
The injunction is expected to affect preparations for the constituency elections scheduled for July 11, 2026, pending further legal proceedings and a determination by the court on the substantive issues raised in the suit.
