Laryea Kingston calls for five-year plan to rebuild Black Stars ahead of next World Cup

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to adopt a long-term strategy as preparations begin for the Black Stars’ next FIFA World Cup campaign.

Ghana’s World Cup journey came to an end in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal in the 14th minute.

Kingston, who is currently in charge of Uganda’s U17 national team, believes the GFA must move away from short-term solutions and create a structured development plan aimed at building a competitive national team over several years.

Speaking on Joy Sports, the former Black Stars winger stressed the importance of giving a coach enough time to implement a clear vision and develop a team capable of competing at the highest level.

“We need a long-term project to build a team. At least five years for a coach to build a team before a tournament,” Kingston said.

The ex-Ghana star also suggested that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations should be used as part of the rebuilding process rather than placing immediate pressure on the team to win the competition.

According to Kingston, Ghana must first focus on developing a strong squad before setting ambitions of lifting the continental title.

“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” he added.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in September, as they seek to rebuild and secure qualification for the continental showpiece.
